FROM THE ROAD

The story behind the series, and the moments that do not make the final cut. Notes, stills and small human encounters from wherever Off The Table lands next.

How it began

THE INCEPTION OF OFF THE TABLE

Off The Table did not start as a television show. It started with a rucksack, a camera and a simple habit: wherever Ricky Seaman went, he sat down and ate with the people who lived there, in their language, at their table.

Years on the road, from Pacific atolls to markets most travellers never reach, taught him one thing again and again. The distance between people is almost always smaller than the headlines make it look. Food is the way in. Language is the key. And the honest conversation that follows a shared meal is where the real story lives.

"I don't want to show you a country. I want to introduce you to someone in it."

Off The Table is that instinct, made into a series. Each episode is a single place and a single table, filmed on the ground, then unpacked back in New York with director and co-creator Mark Dearborn. The idea is small and stubborn: proximity changes everything, so sit down, share a meal, and let the distance disappear.
